There is a lot of focus on smart cards within the Public Sector. Recently the budget in 2006 announced that free national off-peak bus travel for over 60's and disabled residents in England would be in place by April 2008. This could result in excess of 10 million smart cards being rolled out through Local Authorities. The smart card agenda is also important to local Authorities due to the Government's focus on smart enabling Libraries for residents. Some local Authorities have been taking independent smart card strategies for areas such as Concessionary Travel, Libraries and Leisure, where as some Authorities have been looking at an integrated Smart Card solution to allow citizens to have one smart card that can work with many applications. This can include many certificates for citizens on smart cards to work with PKI solutions.
Universal Smart Cards has been involved from the beginning with the National Smart Card program and has experience in working with several Local Authorities involving technologies such as Mifare and JCOP. This can include many of the solutions listed above including loading of the ITSO shell.
