Physical Access Control

Smart cards are now accepted as the token of choice for Physical Access Control.
There are three primary contactless technologies considered for physical access control which are: 125kHz, ISO14443, and ISO15693 technologies.

1/ 125 kHz.
This technology historically has been widely used by the majority of today's access control solutions and is based on firm industry standards. The technology is however read only and therefore the on card solutions are very limited.

2/ ISO14443, and ISO15693 technologies.
These smart cards are truly ‘smart' and intelligent. They allow for read/write devices and are capable of storing different kinds of data on card and operating at different ranges. (Typically 5-10 cm to 5 meters)

One example of ISO14443 is Mifare, which has been widely produced by both Phillips and Infineon. The advantage of this technology is that it allows for multiple applications on one card and many of the cashless vending and loyalty integrators now support this technology.
