27-01-2010 - Introduction of Mifare Plus
First samples of a brand new contactless security card have immediately impressed specialist suppliers Universal Smart Cards.
Universal Smart Cards are already forecasting that Mifare Plus will be in huge demand in the transport, vending, access control, education and loyalty markets.
Until now, Mifare Classic has been the number one seller, but Michael Smith and Chris Allen, directors of Universal Smart Cards, are confident that Mifare Plus's new state-of-the-art technology will be at the forefront of emerging markets.
"The industry has been waiting with baited breath for nine months for the introduction of this product," said Chris Allen.
"We have orders in the pipeline and now that we have actually received samples of Mifare Plus we can truly say the wait has been well worthwhile and that our order book is set to rise substantially.
"We sell millions of Mifare security cards a year throughout Europe and we predict that the higher security offered by Mifare Plus will make it market leader with our sales doubling by the end of next year."
He said Mifare Plus has a memory capacity of 2kb or 4kb as opposed to Classic which has a 1 or 4kb EEPROM. Mifare Plus has sector encryption of 2 x 48 bit per sector - as with Mifare Classic - or the new AES keys which are 2 x 128 bit per sector. In addition, the UID is 7byte with options for 4byte during migration.
There are two versions, Mifare Plus S and Mifare Plus X, depending on a client's current project and security requirements.
Mifare Plus, now possibly the most advanced contactless memory product on the market, is competitively priced and Universal Smart Cards intend to have stock readily available as soon as the card reaches the market.
"This will make it easier for clients to move immediately to the new product," said Chris Allen.
